Event summary:
The Second Sunday activities drew participants to historic Dumont Hill for walking and hiking on the new two-mile hiking/biking nature trail around the parameter, and a preview of coming historic trails on the summit using Trivia stations along a half-mile trail. Participants could also shoot a 'mock cannon', depicting science and math principles. The Enviro-Hunt challenged participants to locate nine natural objects along the two-mile trail, mark their items and return their form for prizes. Schools offered students extra credit for completion of the History Trivia Challenge, with Allen County/Scottsville History and English students, Allen County Homemakers and Civil War re-enactors manning many of the stations. The trail walks were kicked off with seventeen members of the Allen County/Scottsville cross country team running the two-mile nature trail and officially opening the trail site to the public!

Comments:

"I didn't know that we had this great trail and property right in downtown!"

"What an opportunity for family fun."

"This trail is a great workout with beautiful scenery"

"Don't start this trail if you are not fit! It's a challenge!"

Interactive 'scavenger hunts' were successful in drawing participants to walk/hike trails. Involving schools with activities, as well as classroom extra credit, was a huge incentive for participation — along with sunny weather!

"The Cooperative Extension Service is ideally positioned to facilitate a project like Second Sunday that requires grassroots organization at the county level combined with statewide coordination. I am delighted that we are a key leader of this partnership that is so visibly promoting health and wellness for the Commonwealth."
